Comment span used to be very obvious, full of links. Now there’s the “smart” spam which usually contains some simple generic comment like “nice site!” and one link in the comment author’s url to some spam site. even the best spam catches, such as Akismet, don’t catch those, and it’s really getting annoying. So, as of today, All first time comments are hold for moderation. If you already have an approved comment on this blog, your comment will appear immediately. I really hope this works, cause I’d hate holding all comments in moderation.

I hate that kind of spam… for some reason, they’ve been hitting my photoblog with that lately and it drives me mad! Every time an anti-spam solution is created, the spammers come up with a different method of attack.
I can only assume that spamming is a huge business and worth ruining the internet for. If it weren’t for the fact that I work online for a living, I would seriously consider ditching the web and going outside or something!
Akismet is not the best choice. You must use the full lists of spam words + some new plugins + original captcha.
For example. I have the blog – http://www.blog.gekos.ru (on Russian). Each day I had received more than 50-70 spam comments. But now I check my spam-filter: 5 comments per 2 weeks.
I’ve never had problems since the beggining of opening my own wp, but if you get more traffic (more comments), you would probably have to approve a lot of comments.
Still, would rather approve comments other than having to erase spam each time.
But this is just my opinion.
